laid the foundation for a national initiative aimed at increasing college enrollment and graduation rates. Over time, TRIO expanded to include additional programs, such as Upward Bound Math-Science, the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program, and Educational Opportunity Centers, all designed to support students at various stages of their academic journey.
Recognizing the need to provide greater opportunities for high school students in Mississippi, Rust College established its Upward Bound Classic Program to help students strengthen their academic skills, navigate the college admissions process, and develop leadership and career readiness. The program has played a critical role in increasing high school graduation rates and college enrollment among first-generation and low-income students, providing tutoring, ACT/SAT preparation, financial literacy education, and college exposure through campus visits.
Building on this success, Rust College later introduced the Upward Bound Math-Science Program, designed to equip students with advanced STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) skills. This program emphasizes hands-on laboratory research, coding, robotics, and STEM career exploration, preparing students for fields in high demand. With a focus on critical thinking and problem-solving, Upward Bound Math-Science provides students with access to mentorship, industry partnerships, and summer experiences that strengthen their foundation in math and science.
For decades, the Rust College Upward Bound Programs have been transforming lives, breaking barriers, and empowering students to pursue higher education and successful careers. With a steadfast commitment to academic excellence, mentorship, and college access, these programs continue to provide students with the tools and support they need to reach their full potential.
